Manchester United's £7 million new signing forgotten, aiming to replace Malacia! Not living in a villa just to gaze at the Dream Theater

Manchester United substituted Tyrell Malacia in the closing stages of their defeat to Newcastle United, and his defensive shortcomings resulted in a last-minute goal. Some supporters remembered the new arrival Diego León, acquired this season for £7 million (£3.3 million initial payment and £3.7 million in potential bonuses), questioning why he hasn't been given opportunities, whereas Malacia, who will depart without a fee in the summer, remains on the pitch.

According to British media reports, Manchester United had hoped to loan out 18-year-old León during the January winter transfer window to another club, such as the French Ligue 1 side Nice, owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, to gain experience at the first-team level. However, León and his agent decided to stay with the club, hoping to continue adapting and anticipating some chances in the first team.

Unfortunately, León did not get his wish to appear for the first team; he has yet to make his debut and has not even been included in the squad for quite some time. Brazilian media recently visited his apartment in Manchester. The young United player did not choose a luxurious downtown residence or a suburban villa; instead, he lives in a small house near Old Trafford, from which he can gaze at Manchester United's home stadium.

From the narrow balcony of León's residence, one can see the River Irwell, the Bridgewater Canal, and the Dream Theater by the riverbank. "Over there, you can see Old Trafford Stadium, with a very open view," said Christian Martin, who interviewed León. He also reminded León that he is the first Paraguayan player in Manchester United's history, and the latter responded: "I am training hard and fighting for it."

León also briefly described his daily routine after arriving in England, and training with the first-team players clearly left a deep impression on him.

He particularly mentioned watching renowned players like Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Lisandro Martínez practice near the training ground, as well as waking up every morning to see Old Trafford Stadium, which has become a driving force in his life.

"Seeing such a view every morning, then going to training and seeing Casemiro, Bruno, Licha, fills you with motivation," León said standing by the window. He has sat on the bench at Old Trafford; this season he has been included in the first-team squad three times, for away matches against Manchester City and Brentford, but the 2-0 victory over Sunderland was a home game. Sadly, after that match, he has not been in the 20-man squad again.

Currently, León mainly plays for Manchester United's Under-21 reserve team, making 16 appearances and scoring one goal. His performances have been mixed; fans who follow youth development might recall his half-field sprint and goal against Tottenham early in the season, which was somewhat lucky but also quite spectacular. However, last week against Chelsea U21, León's performance was unsatisfactory.

Manchester United U21 ultimately lost 0-2, and with three players including Chido Obi leaving due to injuries, things went poorly. León also performed inadequately in both attack and defense; he was overpowered by Chelsea's Swedish winger Genesis Antwi and made several mistakes in attack, including a long pass that went directly out of bounds, which was quite embarrassing.

Nevertheless, Manchester United's senior teammate Matthijs de Ligt has praised León highly: "Diego (León) is a very talented player. He is powerful, physically strong, possesses all the necessary physical and technical abilities to become a very outstanding player. He is also full of energy, enthusiastic, eager to perform well, and is a significant competitive force within our team.
