Why is Guardiola still allowed to coach Man City in the League Cup final against Arsenal?

Coach Pep Guardiola will still appear on the sidelines in the League Cup final between Man City and Arsenal taking place in the next two weeks, despite the Spanish strategist recently receiving a two-match coaching ban.

The disciplinary decision was made after Guardiola received his sixth yellow card of the season during Manchester City's 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The incident occurred when he reacted strongly to the referee's decision following a clash between Kieran Trippier and Jeremy Doku.

In that incident, Doku was pulled from behind while sprinting towards the penalty area. Guardiola believed it was a clear foul, but the referee did not whistle. This caused him to lose his composure, approaching the fourth official Lewis Smith to protest. The Spanish coach even angrily tugged at his jacket in frustration.

The tension did not end there. After the match concluded, Guardiola continued trying to approach the referees to argue and only stopped when members of the coaching staff intervened. His heated reaction is considered part of a prolonged series of frustrations for the Manchester club regarding referee decisions they view as inconsistent this season.

According to the new disciplinary rules applied from this season, receiving six yellow cards equates to a two-match coaching ban. Previously, Guardiola also had to watch from the stands during Manchester City's 10-1 victory over Exeter City in the FA Cup third round in January after accumulating three yellow cards.

However, this ban only applies to matches in the Premier League and FA Cup. Domestic cup finals and European competitions are not covered by this regulation. Therefore, Guardiola remains eligible to be on the sidelines for the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

Instead, he will have to watch from the stands in Manchester City's next Premier League match against West Ham United. Additionally, Guardiola will also be absent from his team's FA Cup quarter-final, scheduled for early April after the draw for that round is completed.

Speaking after the match at St James' Park, Guardiola explained the reason for his strong reaction. He stated that when Doku passed Trippier and was about to enter the penalty area, he was clearly pulled from behind. According to the 55-year-old manager, he did not demand a yellow card from the referee, but at least it should have been a free kick. The Spanish strategist affirmed he is always ready to defend his players.

While discussing his latest yellow card, Guardiola added a touch of sarcasm by mentioning his unique personal achievement. He said Manchester City has broken many records in English football, and now he also holds another record: the coach with the most yellow cards.

Guardiola even joked that the two-match suspension would be like an unexpected holiday. However, he also admitted there are referee decisions that, after many years working in England, he still cannot fully understand.

During the match at Newcastle, Guardiola's assistant Kolo Toure also received a yellow card. If Guardiola accumulates nine yellow cards this season, he will face a three-match coaching ban. If the number reaches 12, the English Football Association could initiate a separate disciplinary case against Manchester City's manager.
